Spring break. Or not. This is going to be a short one because it’s past 11 on Monday and I just feel like ranting right now.
I have 5, FIVE, assignments right now that I need to work on, most of which are due within a few days of the break ending (which instructors are *supposed* to not be allowed to do). That’s an assignment for every course I’m taking right now! The only course I don’t have one for is Wed Dev and Datacomm makes the difference by throwing an extra one on top of it. Of these 5 projects, 3 haven’t even really been started yet (which is admittedly my own fault for 1 of them, but not so much for the other 2) and the other 2 are so big as to have a huge workload regardless.
Which is where it really gets bad. One of those projects is a class-wide one. The class as a whole is a little behind and consequently everyone overreacted and a bunch of people just completely gave up on it, becoming dead weight for the rest of us and putting us further behind. This 1 project threatens to soak up so much time that I may not even be able to get my other assignments done, much less actually REST!
Needless to say, the whole situation is pretty much terrible. I’m just hoping (HOPING!) I can get most of this stuff done with turbo-speed by Wednesday so that I can at least take the equivalent of a long weekend. After all, more then 4 days off is a statistical impossibility for me at this point short of my developing the ability to function (well) without sleep.
Suddenly, Client/Server doesn’t look like it was such a bad idea any more.
ONE WEEK LATER UPDATE: So break is over and all told I worked around 30 hours on a week where I should have worked maybe 5. Still, for all that work I did at least manage to get caught up on my workload (both the stuff that I fell behind on on my own and was made behind on by others). Honestly not the most fun experience, but certainly a very productive and educational one. I’m not going to take down or edit any of the above as I feel it rather accurately captures my feelings at the time I wrote it and this blog is, after all, intended to capture my experiences as a BCIT student.
What I will do is through in a little after-over context. As I am now, one Monday after the original post, I am for the most part happy with the work I got done over the last week. I was extremely productive during those hours of work, took some serious cues with regards to actually being a good designer and set myself up for finishing this semester caught up and prepared.
Of course the tradeoff for that is an unreasonable level of stress, but in the words of my Option Head “Take the pain; it’s good for you”.
Oh, and I did take Wednesday off, so that’s something.
